Anthony Cruz (born March 9, 1972), better known by his stage name AZ, is an American rapper best recognized for being Nas’ longtime and frequent musical collaborator. Nas, Foxy Brown, Cormega, and Nature are also members of the hip-hop collective The Firm. AZ was named the “Most Underrated [Rapper] of All Time” by the online magazine About.com. AZ was described as “probably the most undervalued lyricist ever” in the list of the “Top 50 MCs of Our Time (1987-2007)” on the website.
AZ originally gained notoriety by singing on the opening track “The Genesis” and the song “Life’s a Bitch” off Nas’s seminal 1994 album Illmatic. After joining EMI, AZ quickly released his critically acclaimed debut album, Doe or Die, in 1995. “Sugar Hill,” the album’s debut song, became AZ’s biggest commercial hit as a solo artist, peaking at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and becoming gold. When the EMI Label Group closed, AZ’s EMI contract was moved to sister labels Noo Trybe Records and Virgin Records.
Following the release of this album, AZ joined forces with Motown and Universal Records and issued 9 Lives. He published Aziatic in 2002. The album’s hit “The Essence,” which features Nas, received a 2003 Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
