Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band founded in 2002 in Sheffield. Alex Turner (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Jamie Cook (guitar, keyboards), Nick O’Malley (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Matt Helders make up the band (drums, backing vocals). Andy Nicholson (bass guitar, backing vocals) quit the band in 2006, shortly after the release of their debut album.
The success of their critically praised fifth album AM (2013), which was supported by the global smash “Do I Wanna Know?” propelled the band to further international notoriety. It reached the top of four Billboard charts and was certified platinum in the United States. The album became their third British Album of the Year winner at the 2014 BRIT Awards. Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018), their sixth album, was a significant departure from the band’s prior guitar-heavy output, instead being piano-oriented. It was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 2019 Grammy Awards, their second after Whatever They Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. The Vehicle, their seventh studio album, was released in 2022.
With their first five albums, the band became the first independent-label band to debut at number one in the United Kingdom. The band has received seven Brit Awards, including three for Best British Group and three for British Album of the Year, making them the first band to ever “do the double” (win in both categories) three times; a Mercury Prize for Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, an Ivor Novello Award, and 20 NME Awards. They’ve also been nominated for six Grammys and garnered Mercury Prize nominations in 2007, 2013, and 2018.
