AFI (A Fire Within) is an American rock band from Ukiah, California that started in 1991. It has been led by Davey Havok, drummer and backup vocalist Adam Carson, bassist, backing vocalist, and keyboardist Hunter Burgan, and guitarist, backing vocalist, and keyboardist Jade Puget since 1998. Havok and Carson are the only original members still alive. They began as a hardcore punk band and have since expanded into several genres, beginning with horror punk and progressing through post-hardcore and emo to alternative rock and gothic rock.
AFI has eleven studio albums, ten EPs, one live CD, and one DVD to their credit. The band’s fifth album, The Art of Drowning (2000), achieved significant commercial success, peaking at number 174 on the Billboard 200. They then broke into the mainstream with their sixth album, Sing the Sorrow (2003), which reached number five on the Billboard 200 and stayed there for 51 weeks. Popular songs from the album included “Girl’s Not Grey” and “Silver and Cold,” both of which peaked at number seven on America’s Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart in 2003. “The Departing Song Pt. II” was also released as a single and peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. The RIAA certified Sing the Sorrow Platinum in 2006, and it is AFI’s best-selling release, having sold over 1.26 million copies as of September 2009.
Decemberunderground (2006), AFI’s seventh album, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and featured the smash track “Miss Murder,” which topped the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100, and appeared in the video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. The RIAA certified the album Platinum in 2013. Crash Love (2009), Burials (2013), and AFI (2017) were also successful, reaching increasing ranks on the Billboard 200. In December 2018, The Lost Man EP was released. On June 11, 2021, the band released their 11th album, Bodies.
