Ryan O’Neal, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, leads the musical project Sleeping at Last. The project began as a three-piece band in Wheaton, Illinois, with Ryan O’Neal as the lead singer and guitarist, his brother Chad O’Neal as the drummer, and Dan Perdue as the bassist. In 2000, the band self-released their debut album, Capture, which drew the notice of Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who helped them sign to a big record label, Interscope Records. The band’s first major label album, Ghosts, was released in 2003, before becoming independent and releasing Keep No Score in 2006 and Storyboards in 2009.
Both Chad O’Neal and Perdue left the band in the years following the publication of their first four albums to pursue other interests. Ryan O’Neal elected to keep the band’s name for his solo work from then on, but he preferred single songs and short EPs over traditional albums.
