My Morning Jacket is an American rock band founded in 1998 in Louisville, Kentucky. Jim James, vocalist/guitarist, bassist Tom Blankenship, drummer Patrick Hallahan, guitarist Carl Broemel, and keyboardist Bo Koster make up the band. The band’s sound is experimental and trippy, with roots in rock and country. Beginning in the 2000s, the group gained a following in part due to their live performances.
Following the publication of their debut album, The Tennessee Fire (1999), the group first achieved fame in Europe. Its next release, At Dawn (2001), drew a strong fanbase in the United States and heralded multiple lineup changes. After signing with major label ATO Records, the band released two albums, It Still Moves (2003) and Z (2005), the latter of which was a critical success. The following album, Evil Urges (2008), was more divisive among fans and critics, while Circuital (2011), the group’s sixth album, had a more measured response. The Waterfall, the band’s seventh album, was released in 2015, followed by The Waterfall II in 2020 and My Morning Jacket in 2021.
