The Decemberists are a Portland, Oregon-based American indie rock band. Colin Meloy (lead vocals, guitar, songwriter), Chris Funk (guitar, multi-instrumentalist), Jenny Conlee (piano, keyboards, accordion), Nate Query (bass), and John Moen (drums) make up the band.
In 2001, they self-released their debut EP, 5 Songs. Capitol Records published its eighth and most recent full-length album, I’ll Be Your Girl, on March 16, 2018. It is the band’s fifth record with the label.
The Decemberists are highly renowned for their varied live acts, as well as their lyrics, which frequently draw on historical happenings and/or folklore. Each performance includes audience interaction, usually during encores. The band performs fanciful reenactments of sea battles and other centuries-old events, usually of regional importance, or performs songs with audience members.
At the 54th Grammy Awards in 2011, the song “Down by the Water” from the album The King Is Dead was nominated for Best Rock Song.
