Stone Temple Pilots (abbreviated STP) is a San Diego, California-based American rock band founded by Scott Weiland (lead vocals), brothers Dean (guitar) and Robert DeLeo (bass, backing vocals), and Eric Kretz (drums). From the band’s inception in 1989 until Weiland’s dismissal in February 2013, the lineup stayed intact. Chester Bennington, the lead singer of Linkin Park, joined the band in May 2013 but departed amicably in November 2015. In 2016, the band had an online audition for a new lead singer, and on November 14, 2017, they introduced Jeff Gutt as the new lead singer.
While the band sprang to prominence as part of the early 1990s grunge movement, subsequent recordings displayed a range of influences, including psychedelic rock, bossa nova, and classic rock. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, STP experienced commercial highs and lows, owing in part to Weiland’s well-publicized battles with drug addiction.
