Hot Chip is a London-based English synthpop band who established in 2000. Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard, Al Doyle, Owen Clarke, and Felix Martin are multi-instrumentalists in the band. Former member Rob Smoughton periodically joins them for live performances and studio recordings. The band generally creates songs in the synth-pop and alternative dance genres, with influences ranging from house to disco. Hot Chip originated as a bedroom recording project for Taylor and Goddard, who met while attending Elliott School in Putney; their first lineup featured drummer Smoughton. Following the release of two EPs, Mexico (2001) and San Frandisco (2002), the band released their debut album, Coming on Strong (2004), and added Doyle, Clarke, and Martin to their roster. The Warning (2006), the band’s second album, was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Made in the Dark (2008), their follow-up album, featured the track “Ready for the Floor,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Following that, the band released the albums One Life Stand (2010), In Our Heads (2012), and Why Make Sense? Freakout/Release (2015), A Bath Full of Ecstasy (2019), and Freakout/Release (2022).
