Yasiin Bey (born Dante Terrell Smith on December 11, 1973) is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor better known by his stage name Mos Def. In 1994, he and his siblings formed the short-lived rap group Urban Thermo Dynamics (UTD), after which they performed on albums by Da Bush Babees and De La Soul. He established the duo Black Star with fellow Brooklyn-based rapper Talib Kweli, and their first album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, with the hits “Definition” and “Respiration,” was released in 1998.
