The Damned is an English punk music band founded in London in 1976 by Dave Vanian, guitarist Brian James, Captain Sensible, and Rat Scabies. They were the first British punk band to issue a single, “New Rose,” in 1976, a studio album, Damned Damned Damned (1977), and tour the United States. They have nine singles that have reached the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart. The Damned had a huge impact on the goth subculture as one of the earliest gothic rock bands, with lead vocalist Vanian’s baritone voice, gloomy lyrics, and vampire-themed clothing.
