Dance Gavin Dance is a 2005 Sacramento, California-based American rock band. Vocalists Jon Mess and Tilian Pearson are joined by lead guitarist Will Swan, rhythm guitarist Andrew Wells, and drummer Matthew Mingus. Jonny Craig and Kurt Travis were previously lead vocalists, as were bassists Eric Lodge, Jason Ellis, and Tim Feerick, and guitarists Alvaro Alcala, Sean O’Sullivan, Zachary Garren, and Josh Benton. Since their start, the lineup has changed several times. Swan and Mingus are the only members of the band that have appeared on each studio album.
In 2006, the band published their debut extended play (EP), Anything I Say Is Royal Ocean, and signed with Rise Records. Downtown Battle Mountain, their debut studio album, was released in May 2007. Kurt Travis and Zachary Garren took over for Craig and guitarist Sean O’Sullivan, who quit the band. In August 2008, they released their self-titled album, Dance Gavin Dance. Before the album’s release, vocalist Jon Mess and bassist Eric Lodge quit the band, and Lodge was replaced by Jason Ellis. The group’s third studio album, Happiness, was released in June 2009.
Jonny Craig, Jon Mess, and Eric Lodge rejoined the band in 2010 to record their fourth studio album, Downtown Battle Mountain II (2011). Craig and Lodge left the band the next year, which led to the addition of former Tides of Man vocalist Tilian Pearson, bassist Tim Feerick, and guitarist Josh Benton. Acceptance Speech (2013) was their fifth studio album; Benton left the band shortly after the album’s release. Immediate Gratification, their sixth studio album, was released in April 2015. The next year, the band released Tree City Sessions, a live album, and Mothership, their seventh studio album, which peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200. Artificial Selection, their eighth studio album, was released in June 2018 and debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200. In 2020, they released their ninth studio album, Afterburner, which debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200, in April, and Tree City Sessions 2 in December.
