Chubby Checker (born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941) is a rock and roll singer and dancer from the United States. With his 1960 smash adaptation of Hank Ballard & The Midnighters’ R&B song “The Twist,” he popularized various dance styles, including the Twist and Pony dance styles. His biggest UK hit, “Let’s Twist Again,” was published a year later (in 1962); that same year, he popularized the song “Limbo Rock,” which was initially an instrumental smash by the Champs to which he added vocals, and its signature Limbo dance, as well as other dance forms such as The Fly.
“The Twist” topped Billboard’s list of the most popular singles to have appeared in the Hot 100 since its launch in 1960 in September 2008, a position it held until an August 2013 edition of the list.
