Kimberly Denise Jones (born July 11, 1974) is an American rapper and reality television star better known by her stage name Lil’ Kim. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, and spent much of her adolescence on the streets after being kicked out of her home. Jones used to freestyle rap in her teens, influenced by female hip-hop rappers like MC Lyte and the Lady of Rage. She was discovered in 1994 by fellow rapper The Notorious B.I.G., who encouraged her to join his group Junior M.A.F.I.A. their debut album, Conspiracy, produced two top 20 songs in the United States and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Lil’ Kim has been dubbed the “Queen of Rap,” as well as “Queen Bee” by numerous media sites. She has sold over 15 million albums and 30 million singles globally. Her songs “No Time,” “Big Mama Thing,” and “Not Tonight (Ladies Night”)” all made Complex’s list of the 50 Greatest Rap Songs By Women. Lil’ Kim was ranked 45th on VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music in 2012, the second-highest position for a solo female hip-hop artist. Aside from music, Lil’ Kim is noted for her daring and lavish approach to fashion, which has influenced numerous musicians; she has been dubbed a fashion icon.
