Lawrence “Kris” Parker (born August 20, 1965) is an American rapper from New York City better known by his stage names KRS-One (an abbreviation for “Knowledge Reigns Superior Over Almost Everyone”) and Teacha. He gained to notoriety as a member of the hip-hop group Boogie Down Productions, which he co-founded in the mid-1980s with DJ Scott La Rock. KRS-One is well known for his songs “Sound of da Police,” “Love’s Gonna Get’cha (Material Love),” and “My Philosophy”. In their early years, Boogie Down Productions garnered numerous honors and critical praise. After the release of the group’s debut album, Criminal Minded, fellow artist Scott La Rock was shot and killed, but KRS-One maintained the band as a solo project. In 1993, he began releasing records under his own name. He is politically active, having founded the Stop the Violence Movement following the death of La Rock. He is also a vegan campaigner, expressed in songs such as “Beef”. He is widely regarded as a major influence on many hip-hop musicians.
