Windel Beneto Edwards, best known by his stage name Gyptian, is a Jamaican reggae singer. He was born on October 25, 1983. In the dancehall type of reggae, he frequently performs songs from the foundations of the music.
Under the supervision of Mr. Wong and Earl Chinna Smith, Gyptian developed his sound, winning the 2004 Star Search talent competition at Kens Wild Flower Bar in Portmore, earning him a slot at Sting 2004, considered the ‘best one-night reggae event on earth’.
The singer gained his nickname from his practice of putting a garment around his head and pulling his chin hair like an Egyptian pharaoh. In 2005, he had two singles, “Is There A Place” on the Seasons Riddim and “Serious Times”.
The singer has been dominating the Jamaican charts with tunes like “Is There a Place,” “Beautiful Girl,” and the chart-topping ballad, “Mama, Don’t Cry.” She was nominated for Best New Entertainer at the 2006 International Reggae and World Music Awards.
My Name Is Gyptian, Gyptian’s debut album, was made available on VP Records on September 12th, 2006. Gyptian, who was in New York City on December 12th, filmed the music video for his new single, “I Can Feel Your Pain” (Cloud Nine Riddim), produced by JonFX, under the direction of Rhona Fox. Its inclusion on his second album, I Can Feel Your Pain, which was published in 2008, was originally revealed through the song.
