Shawn Timothy “Shawn Jay” Johnson and Darion “Smoke” Crawford are members of the American hip-hop group Field Mob, which is based in Albany, Georgia. Field Mob is presently managed by Christopher King’s La’ Roc Management Group and signed to T-label Pain’s Nappy Boy Entertainment (grandson of B.B. King).
Field Mob was signed to Southern House Records, a small independent label, toward the end of 1999 after struggling for a while in the local music industry, and they recorded the single Project Dreamz. The trio then embarked on a promotional tour for their new album at a time when the southern hip-hop industry was expanding. Field Mob became the first southern hip-hop act to be signed to a New York-based label when the record eventually caught the notice of MCA Records Benny Pough. A few days later, Field Mob struck a deal.
Under the name Chevy P, Smoke has a record deal with Phoenix, Arizona-based independent label Mpire Records as of the spring of 2008. Caprice Classics, a new album that was supposed to be released in 2009, has since been delayed. Nonetheless, the pre-release single from this album, “So Lonely,” which was produced by Scott Storch, did see substantial rotation on BET and was featured on a number of hip-hop and video-sharing websites.
