DJ Quik or Da Quiksta, real names David Marvin Blake (born January 18, 1970), is a popular American rapper and producer who is well-known for his work in the G-funk subgenre of West Coast hip-hop. Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Tupac, Chingy, R. Kelly, and Shaquille O’Neal are just a few of the artists with whom Blake has worked. Blake’s stage name represents his ability to compose songs in a short amount of time. Some of his top songs include “Dollaz + Sense”, “Tonite”, “Born and Raised in Compton” and “Jus Lyke Compton”.
Blake attracted the eye of labels like Profile Records and Ruthless Records after developing a mixtape fan base. In the summer of 1990, he reportedly became Profile Records’ first six-figure signee. After later regretting his decision, Eazy-E offered Blake a million-dollar advance. Ruthless Records received letters from Profile Records requesting them to stop.
Quik Is the Name, his debut album, was released in 1991. His two top 20 R&B singles, “Tonite” and “Born and Raised in Compton,” were the driving forces behind the album’s success, which peaked at number 10 on the charts and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. Even though they garnered positive reviews, none of his subsequent albums were as successful as his debut. He later created the second II None.
