Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and indie pop rocker Alexandra Leigh Winston. In Michigan’s Bloomfield Hills, Winston spent his early years. She is a self-taught pianist, guitarist, and composer. She also had traditional opera vocal training. She made the decision to pursue a music career after high school. In Detroit, she and her pals began performing in bands. She relocated to New York City in 2010 and started performing as a solo artist and in bands instead of attending college. She started working with the producers known as the Knocks.
Her debut EP, The Basement Covers, was made available by the independent label Heavy Rock Music. She earned notoriety with the EP, primarily in the UK, and was compared to PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, and Joanna Newsom. She launched her single “Choice Notes” in 2010 and “Locomotive” in 2011. Afterward, Winston issued Sister Wife, another EP. She made it public in 2011. She joined Island Records that year and re-released her EP, The Sister Wife, along with remixes. Her first album, King Con, was made available through the Universal imprint V2 Cooperative Music. The Knocks, Bjorn Yttling, and Charlie Hugall worked together to create her debut album.
Her song “Choice Notes” was featured in ads for TJ Maxx and the Hyundai ix 20 in Europe and the United Kingdom. The Google Chrome ad Julia Dean features the song “Velvet Elvis” as the background music. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Gotye were both supported by Winston on her US and European performances. VFest, Bestival, and The Underage Festival are just a few of the UK festivals where she has performed. Her subsequent hit singles, “101 Vultures,” “Careless,” and most recently, “We Got Nothing,” all came out around that time.
