Ali Shaheed Muhammad is an American hip hop DJ, record producer, and rapper who is best known as a member of A Tribe Called Quest (born August 11, 1970). From 1990 through 1998, the group—which included Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and occasionally Jarobi White—recorded five studio albums; their final one was published in 2016. Muhammad, a Brooklyn, New York, native, presently resides in Los Angeles.
Muhammad joined forces with Raphael Saadiq, previously of Tony, and Dawn Robinson, formerly of En Vogue, to form the R&B supergroup Lucy Pearl after A Tribe Called Quest split up. Toni! Toné! , who issued a single album in 2000. Shaheedullah and Stereotypes, his first solo album, was released on October 12th, 2004. He presently co-hosts the NPR radio program Microphone Check.
As the narrator of the Souls of Mischief album, There Is Only Now, Muhammad collaborated with producer Adrian Younge in 2013. Since then, Muhammad and Younge have worked together to co-produce the Luke Cage TV series’ soundtrack for both seasons, and they have toured as the Midnight Hour since 2018, releasing an album with the same name.
