Canadian rock group Metric was established in Toronto, Ontario, in 1998. The members of the group are Emily Haines (lead vocals, synths, guitar, tambourine, harmonica, and piano), Joshua Winstead (bass, synthesizers, backup vocals), James Shaw (guitar, synthesizers, theremin), and Joules Scott-Key (drums, percussion). Haines and Shaw founded the group in 1998 under the moniker “Mainstream” as a pair. They changed the band’s name to Metric after releasing an EP under the moniker Mainstream EP.
Fantasies, the fourth album by Metric, was made available in 2009. It made the 2009 Polaris Music Prize “Canadian Album of the Year” shortlist and won the “Alternative Album of the Year” at the 2010 Juno Awards. Metric was also named “Group of the Year” for 2010. Synthetica, the fifth studio album from Metric, was made available in 2012. During the 2013 Juno Awards, the group took home two prizes: “Producer of the Year” for Shaw and “Alternative Album of the Year” for Synthetica. The art director/designer/photographer Justin Broadbent also won an award for “Recording Package of the Year” for Synthetica. Pagans in Vegas, Metric’s sixth album, was released in 2015; Art of Doubt, their seventh, was released in 2018.
