Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth (/mn mr/) was founded in Tumba in 1992. The name of the band is derived from Mount Doom, a volcano in J, which has a Sindarin name. Middle-earth by R. R. Tolkien. Although the band says they play melodic death metal, they have occasionally been mistakenly referred to as “Viking metal” because their songs primarily discuss Viking mythology and history.
The members of the group are drummer Jocke Wallgren, bassist Ted Lundström, vocalist Johan Hegg, lead guitarist Olavi Mikkonen, and rhythm guitarist Johan Söderberg. Twelve studio albums, a compilation album, an EP, a video album, and ten music videos have all been released by Amon Amarth. Once Delivered from the Golden Hall, their debut studio album, was released in 1998. Before the band’s breakthrough with the 2008 album Twilight of the Thunder God, which debuted at No. 10 on the Swedish album charts and No. 50 on the US Billboard 200, five other studio albums were released. In 2011, 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2022, respectively, five further albums, Surtur Rising, Deceiver of the Gods, Jomsviking, Berserker, and The Great Heathen Army, were released.
