Gesaffelstein, also known as Mike Lévy (French: [majk levi]; born 24 June 1987), is a French music programmer, DJ, composer, and record producer from Lyon who goes by the stage name Mike Lévy. Together with The Weeknd, Daft Punk, Kanye West, A$AP Rocky, Electric Youth, Haim, Miss Kittin, The Hacker, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Pharrell Williams, he has collaborated with other musicians. The Inrocks describe Gesaffelstein’s sound as “black, ultra-violent music, revives the techno fundamentals, the intransigence of Underground Resistance, the mental and obsessive structures of Drexciya, the contemporary power and more” while Mixmag calls it “dark and threatening techno, though enchanting.” The Washington Post’s Megan Buerger characterizes his music as a blend of dark and underground sounds, and she points out that one of the artist’s specialties is the use of silences to build tension before a “raucous eruption of bass and percussion.”
