Melanie Adele Martinez, an American singer, and songwriter was born on April 28, 1995. Martinez, who was raised in Baldwin, New York, and was born in Astoria, Queens, became well-known in 2012 after participating in the American television singing competition The Voice. After the performance, she signed with Atlantic Records and released “Dollhouse,” the lead single off her debut EP of the same name, in 2014.
Martinez later released her debut studio album, Cry Baby (2015), which the Recording Industry Association of America later certified double-platinum (RIAA). The RIAA awarded gold certification to Martinez’s singles “Sippy Cup,” “Mad Hatter,” “Mrs. Potato Head,” “Cry Baby,” “Pacify Her,” and “Soap,” as well as platinum certification to “Dollhouse” and “Pity Party.”
As a sequel to the plot of Cry Baby, Martinez’s second studio album, K-12 (2019), and its companion movie were both released. After School, her EP was released a year later in 2020.
The genres of pop, alternative pop, art pop, electropop, emo pop, and dark pop have all been used to define Martinez’s music.
