Born on June 21, 1991, Timothy Tyler Childers is an American singer and songwriter. Neotraditional country, bluegrass, and folk are all influences on his music. In August 2017, he made his breakout album Purgatory available. Childers has released several EPs, singles, and five studio albums. His breakthrough album Purgatory, which was published on August 4, 2017, brought him his first success. Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson worked together to create the album, which was recorded at Nashville’s The Butcher Shoppe.
Childers was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2018 Americana Music Honors & Awards in September of that year. During his acceptance speech, which was widely criticized for its criticism of the Americana genre label, Childers stated “as a man who identifies as a country music singer, I feel Americana ain’t no part of nothing and is a distraction from the issues that we’re facing on a bigger level as country music singers. It kind of feels like purgatory.”
Childers’ third studio album, Country Squire, his second for the Hickman Holler label and his second overall, was released on August 2, 2019, following its announcement in May. Simpson and Ferguson once again produced this record. On May 16, 2019, the album’s lead track, “House Fire,” also saw the release of its music video. At the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, “All Your’n,” the second song from the album, was nominated for Best Country Solo Performance.
A triple album called Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? was released by Childers on September 30, 2022. There are three sections on the album: Hallelujah, Jubilee, and Joyful Noise, and eight songs are presented in three distinct ways in each section (Jubilee versions for example have additional instruments added to the Hallelujah version). Based on 27,000 units sold in the first week, the album debuted at No. 8, becoming Childers’ first top 10 albums on the Billboard 200.
